Résumé : |
In learning a foreign or a second language, first-year students experience anxiety which
inhibits seriously their learning and performance. The present study aims to explore the
impact of anxiety on students’ speaking skill. It is mainly concerned with trying to reduce
students’ anxiety to maximize their oral production. It also attempts to shed some light on
the importance of establishing a relaxed and friendly environment in the classroom to help
learners use the language spontaneously. The basic hypothesis adopted in this study sets
out that if teachers succeed in lowering students’ anxiety and stress, they will able to
engage them in communication and classroom interaction. The method of this research
work is quite descriptive. It aims to describe two variables: anxiety in learning as an
organizing variable and its negative impact on learners’ oral proficiency as a dependent
variable. The data were gathered through two self-completed questionnaires administrated
to first-year university students and to teachers who have taught Oral Expression at the
Department of English, University of Constantine 1. The results have shown that lowering
anxiety is the right way to increase learners’ language use and classroom participation. On
the basis of these results, the hypothesis was confirmed in that teachers should reduce
students’ anxiety by providing them with adequate techniques to develop their speaking
skill and make them use the language without hesitation. Future research should be done
experimentally to test out the applicability of the findings to a larger population of
subjects. |
