Résumé : |
Achieving a satisfactory level in speaking in English is the goal that must
be achieved in both teaching and learning. However, the majority of
students are unable to reach this satisfaction for the speaking skill which
entails a series of difficulties that result in students’ poor oral
productions. They find it very difficult to master and therefore, fail to
produce a successful oral production. This study deals with the speaking
skill and its relation to the affective variables and more precisely with
self-esteem. Thus, the overall purpose is, at the first place, to show the
importance of self-esteem in facilitating the oral production and and
how it can be a motivating force in the development of the speaking skill
for achieving a better and successful oral production. Second, to make
all the teachers (either of oral expression or other modules) aware about
the importance of the affective aspect in learning and practicing a
language in order to improve the ways of teaching speaking. Thus, many
questions must be asked. How can self-esteem influence the students’
performance in oral production? What are the learners supposed to do
to boost their self-esteem to facilitate speaking? Answers to these
questions should enlighten teachers to know the relationship between
these two variables, and consequently be in a position to better prepare
their lessons of teaching speaking. To carry out this study, two
preliminary questionnaires were used: one administered to Master one
students and the other to Master one teachers of oral expression. Then
a test was made, which was analysed and interpreted. The results reveal
that Master one students really face a great deal to master the speaking
skill when we are talking about low self-esteem students; where the
teacher and the learner alike heave responsibilities related to: lack of
interest in affective variables, lack of attention given to this crucial
aspect when teaching oral expression, and also the luck of efforts made
from the both sides. Obviously, those findings would guide us to suggest
some solutions and advices to improve students’ level of speaking |
