Résumé : |
This research aims at investigating to what extent third-year English students are aware of the impact of reading on their vocabulary and self-confidence. It attempts to examine to what extent reading can help students understand and use new vocabulary they encounter during the process of reading without using dictionaries. The reason behind choosing such subject is because most students face difficulties when they come to express their ideas in both writing and speaking that are due to the lack of vocabulary and the lack of effective reading outside the classroom. This research work hypothesizes that if third-year English students at the University of Constantine 1 apply reading as a means of knowledge using effective strategies; they would be able to acquire new words. To reach the aim of this study, some data are collected by means of two questionnaires. The first was administrated to forty third-year English students at the University of Constantine 1. The analysis of the results proves that a considerable number of the students benefit from reading as it helps them to acquire new vocabularies. This analysis also shows that without the use of dictionaries, students fail to understand words just in their context; therefore, they are always in need for using dictionaries. Another questionnaire was addressed twenty teachers of English at the University of Constantine 1 in order to see whether they encourage their students to read or not and whether they attribute their students’ failure in both written and oral expression to the lack of extensive reading outside the classroom. The results show that most teachers encourage their students to read outside the classroom, but students do not read; thus, they face difficulties in both writing and speaking because of the lack of vocabulary. Teachers also agree on the helpfulness of reading for pleasure in enriching students’ vocabulary |
