The aim of this present research is to investigate the effectiveness of using songs as a teaching
strategy to increase students’ familiarity with new vocabulary items. As a first step the main
hypothesis is: if teachers integrate English songs in the learning process then students’ English
vocabulary will improve. It is believed that vocabulary can be acheived through practice. This
research contains two parts : the theoritical part and the field work. To achieve our aim we
relied on two means of research: teachers’ questionnaire and students test. Teachers’
questionnaire was designed to collect data about the different techniques which teachers use to
teach new words in their lessons. The test was divided into pre-test and post-test. The pre-test
aims at evaluating students’ vocabulary and post-test aims at finding out whether students
have benefited from songs. The results show that students have nearly learnt the majority of
the unfamiliar vocabulary items which they dealt with in the pre-test. For this reason, songs
should be incorporated in the teaching curriculum |
