Résumé : |
English is a vehicle for international communication. In order to convey understandable speech, we need to pronounce the language correctly. However, English learners require some aids to help them pronounce accurately. The focus of this dissertation is in the area of teaching pronunciation and the reasons behind students’ failure in pronouncing English correctly in Algerian secondary schools. A specific attention is given to the consequence of the absence of language laboratories on teaching pronunciation as well on the students’ pronunciation. The research method adopted in this dissertation is a questionnaire addressed to twelve English teachers in three secondary schools in Chelghoum Laid, Mila. The findings from this research provide evidence that language laboratories have great importance in teaching English pronunciation, and that all teachers like to include audio-visual aids in their classroom instruction in order to teach pronunciation appropriately. The insufficient time devoted to phonetic courses is listed at the top of the reasons that lead to learners’ mispronunciation of English. The main conclusion drawn from this study is that teaching pronunciation requires the use of authentic materials, and it is time for the Algerian educational system to include new technological aids in the classrooms. Learners should also be given more time to practice the language and to learn its phonetics |
