The first chapter deals with
phrasal verbs as crucial components in English, while the second chapter deals
with writing and vocabulary, and phrasal verbs as vocabulary items. The crucial
purpose of this study is to check out the effectiveness of our device in teaching
and bolstering up our students to use phrasal verbs in their writings. We will
fu
rther, try to check our the hypothesis whether using authentic literary loaded
texts as a device in teaching phrasal verbs could be achieved and be ended up in
real application. By checking out the phrasal verbs that are made up by students,
it
is mainly after their reception of phrasal verbs in authentic texts, during their
process of writing. To achieve this objective, we relied on two means of
reseach: two tests and two questionnaires carried out. The pre-test is
administred in order to see students ' use of phrasal verbs. The post-test is
administred to check out our hypothesis through analysing students'own
production. The second tool is the students and teachers' questionnaires that are
designed to touch on different points. These points range between the lack of
such items in students ' productions, the reasons behind such lack, along with
their opinions towards authentic texts as a device in teaching. The results of
this investigation confirmed our hypothesis and showed up learners- subject to
study- proved to have shifted their old passive vocabulary items into active
ones. This is mainly due to their reception of our device in teaching phrasal
verbs in authentic literary loaded texts.Diplôme : Master 2 En ligne : ../theses/anglais/YAH1183.pdf Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=4809 Bolstering-up Students with Authentic Literary Loaded Texts as an Effective Device to Use phrasal Verbs in Their Writings : The Case of Third Year Students, University of Constantine [texte imprimé] / Nadjia Yahia ; Univ. de Constantine, Éditeur scientifique ; Nacif Labed, Directeur de thèse . - 2010 . - 113 f. ; 30 cm.

Langue AnglaiseTags : Algerian university Students Linguistics Code-variation Index. décimale : 420 Anglais et vieil anglais (anglo-saxon) : indice de base 42 Résumé : This thesis examines code variation among Algerian university students and the effects of Arabic and French in contact. It focuses on three main goals:
(1) exploring the linguistic patterns that result from language mixing, (2) investigating the factors of language choice and the extent of language choice predictability, and (3) studying the attitudes towards code-switching. Data from naturally-occurring conversations by 112 students from both sexes and a census questionnaire administered to 248 other ones are analysed to explore the linguistic, the sociolinguistic, and the attitudinal effects and to test the hypotheses related to the main goals.
Two language mixing patterns which include other sub-patterns are identified. Borrowing is performed according to different levels of integration that lead to the production of three sub-patterns: integrated, non-adapted, and non-conventional borrowings. Code-switching can be identified as little or heavier according to the number of items inserted within the Matrix Language.
In addition, the analysis reveals the existence of code-switching between Spoken Algerian Arabic (SAA) and French and between SAA and Modern Standard Arabic (MSA).
Factors of language choice are investigated in the light of Grosjean’s model. Language choice is performed according to specific factors that make it predictable in most cases. However, the results support the hypothesis that there are cases of language choice which are unpredictable. Moreover, female students use language as a communicative strategy more than male students do.
Attitudes towards code-switching are analysed to determine the nature of these attitudes. The findings support the hypothesis that positive attitudes can be associated with code-switching. In addition to the negative attitudes, codeswitchers consider their behaviour positively. These contradictory opinions lead to discrepancies between the speaker’s language behaviour and attitudes.Diplôme : Doctorat En ligne : ../theses/anglais/AHM1021.pdf Permalink : index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=4868 Code-variation among algerian university students : A case study [texte imprimé] / Haouès Ahmed Sid ; Univ. de Constantine, Éditeur scientifique ; Zahri Harouni, Directeur de thèse . - 2008 . - 308 f. ; 30 cm.

A pre-experimental study was conducted to investigate the teaching of this module using a teachers’ questionnaire, classroom observations, and a teachers’ interview. The questionnaire revealed that the majority of the teachers are unaware of language teaching methods, due to the unavailability of teacher training programs. The classroom observations and the teachers’ interview confirmed the absence of a syllabus, a fact which led teachers to be randomly free in their teaching as they deliver completely heterogeneous contents. On the basis of these findings, the present research sets out to suggest an eclectic approach and an integrated syllabus to teach this module. It aims at proving the importance of designing and providing a well-defined program mainly based on the students’ needs and interests. Another equally significant aim is to shed light on the teaching of interactional skills to help the students become more communicatively competent. We hypothesized that if teachers of Oral Expression followed a pre-defined syllabus, their teaching
process would be more coherent and the students would achieve more homogeneous results. We also hypothesized that if the students were introduced to aspects of interactional talk, they would improve their interactional skills and communicative competence. The two hypotheses are tested by means of a pre-test and post-test design in which one control group and one experimental group are involved. The results obtained validate both hypotheses. The students in the two groups attained utterly heterogeneous levels of skills acquisition. And after introducing the students in the experimental group to aspects of talk as interaction and conversational techniques, their interactional skills have improved, and they have been able to produce a natural conversational output.
