Our aim is to check whether the representation of delexical verb combinations in this dictionary can be helpful for second year students of English at Constantine University I who are likely to face problems with this type at combinations. This research is carried out through three tasks: a filling in the gap task with the appropriate delexical verb: to have, to give, to make, to take. In the second and third tasks, the students are asked to explain the meaning of delexical combinations in context without using a dictionary and then by using a dictionary. The dictionary used in checking the meaning of the combinations under study is Oxford learners’ Pocket dictionary(2008). The results of the test show that in most cases, students were unable to understand the meaning of delexical combinations which indicates that they are unfamiliar with such combinations, and that the use of this kind of combinations by students is very limited. On the other hand, the results show that OLPD is relatively useful for the students. Even though it provides the meaning of some delexical combinations it still needs to be enriched with a larger set of these combinations. second year students of English. It seeks to analyze the performance of forty learners in a test
conducted at the university of Frères Mentouri, Constantine 1 in order to arrive at the main
difficulties of the English Conditionals. It was hypothesized that lack of exposure to the English
language leads to committing mistakes and lack of proper use of conditional sentences. Through
the analysis of the test, this study confirms the "third conditional type" as the most difficult for
students. The results also show that students are unable to apply grammatical rules correctly,
they are not fully aware of the different conditional structures and it is, also, revealed that there is
interference of the mother tongue. Thus, it is recommended to encourage students to take part in
more formal tasks, and to have teachers involve them as much as possible in order to change
their old habits and improve their performance when dealing with English Conditionals, in

language on the development of their listening comprehension. In the present
study, Arabic is introduced through the use of Arabic subtitles as a technique to
facilitate the listening process and track any improvement in the listening
comprehension of first year LMD students at “Mentouri Brothers” University,
Constantine. We hypothesize that exposing first year students to videos subtitled
in Arabic would improve their listening comprehension of English. To achieve
this goal, a group of first year English students, selected randomly, are assigned to
watch a video twice, first without subtitles, then with Arabic subtitles and they are
requested to answer a set of 12 comprehension questions about the content of the
video. The aim of the test is to track any improvement in the students’ listening
comprehension. A questionnaire is devised to complement the tests’ data. It aims
basically to have some insights about students’ attitude towards the use of the
Arabic subtitles to improve their listening comprehension skill. The findings show
that Arabic subtitles helped extensively in improving the learners listening

This work investigates the problem of students‟ pragmatic competence in relation to understanding
hidden messages in requesting speech acts. The aim of this study is to investigate students‟ awareness
about the existence of implied meanings communicated through utterances and their ability to
understand implied meanings in some requesting speech acts. Thus, the hypothesis put forward claims
that students‟ focus on the linguistic meaning of words leads them to failure in inferring the intended
meaning of the utterances under study. In order to check the research‟ s hypothesis, a questionnaire
and a test are administered to second year English students at l‟École Normale Supérieure (henceforth
ENS), Constantine university 3. While the questionnaire provides insights about the students‟
awareness of the fact that what is communicated is more than what is said, the test examines the
students‟ ability to infer implied meanings of a set of requesting speech acts. Though they claim their
awareness that speech acts mean more than what they say, the findings show that the students focus
and rely only on the semantic meaning of words in utterances, rather than realising speakers‟ intended
meaning. Furthermore, the results give evidence of the students‟ lack the pragmatic proficiency
required to react appropriately to implicit requests. Consequently, they fail to reach the speakers‟
