Our aim is to check whether the representation of delexical verb combinations in this dictionary can be helpful for second year students of English at Constantine University I who are likely to face problems with this type at combinations. This research is carried out through three tasks: a filling in the gap task with the appropriate delexical verb: to have, to give, to make, to take. In the second and third tasks, the students are asked to explain the meaning of delexical combinations in context without using a dictionary and then by using a dictionary. The dictionary used in checking the meaning of the combinations under study is Oxford learners’ Pocket dictionary(2008). The results of the test show that in most cases, students were unable to understand the meaning of delexical combinations which indicates that they are unfamiliar with such combinations, and that the use of this kind of combinations by students is very limited. On the other hand, the results show that OLPD is relatively useful for the students. Even though it provides the meaning of some delexical combinations it still needs to be enriched with a larger set of these combinations. Format : 30 cm. Note générale : Une copie elelctronique PDF disponible en Buc. Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Lettres et Langues Etrangères:Langue Anglaise Tags : Applied Language Studies Difficulties Students Translation English Polysemous Using Dictionary Index. décimale : 420 Langue anglaise Résumé : The present research attempts to investigate the difficulties that English second year students
meet when translating English polysemous words into Arabic using the bilingual dictionary. In
other words, this current research is concerned with the assessment of the bilingual
dictionaries, used by second year students, in terms of rendering English polysemous words.
So, the hypothesis that we set at the beginning of this research is, if the bilingual dictionaries
used by second year students do not provide the linguistic context, then students will not
succeed in the translation of polysemous words. The data were gathered by means of two
research tools namely, a test and a questionnaire that were administered to a sample of English
second year students. The analysis of the data confirms the truth of the aforementioned
hypothesis because the examined students failed in the translation of polysemous words which
show that their bilingual dictionaries do not provide the linguistic context. The obtained data
confirm also that the bilingual dictionary is not a helpful tool for students to translate
polysemous words as, in most cases, it misleads them to choose the right equivalents, due to
the fact that they are not accompanied with examples that show the learner the use of each
equivalent.Diplome : Master 2 Permalink : https://bu.umc.edu.dz/master/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=3466 Difficulties met by students in the translation of english polysemous words using the bilingual dictionary : A case study of second year students of english [texte imprimé] / Houda Bellir, Auteur ; Menouba Lounis, Auteur ; Riad Belouahem, Directeur de thèse . - CONSTANTINE [ALGERIE] : Université Frères Mentouri Constantine, 2011 . - 86 f. ; 30 cm.
