Résumé : |
During the last decades, the world has witnessed an incredibly rapid evolution especially in the field of communication and technology; hence, it becomes a small village. This situation raises the importance of learning foreign languages; people now need more than one language to communicate and practice their daily lives. English as the language of access to science and technology attracted a huge number of foreign learners all over the world. In the light of this, the present research revolves around learning English as a foreign language. However, learning a language goes always side by side with the learning of other human aspects such as thought and culture. Here, it is worth mentioning that the learning of these aspects may influence the learners’ way of thinking in terms of some abstract notions. This idea is restated and set as the hypothesis of this research as it deals with the influence of English as a foreign language on Arab learners’ way of thinking. In other words, if Arab learners of English learn its culture, then, they are more likely to build a new way of thinking, by altering or adjusting their first culture in terms of the abstract notions that are manifested in their behavior and major decisions. The nature of the subject stresses the need for a practical part to check the validity of the established hypothesis through the use of a questionnaire. The results obtained reveal that the influence of English on Arab learners is relative; they adjust their way of thinking to cope with the newly acquired culture in some respects, and keep it as it is in others. |
