This study is a qualitative and quantitative work which has been undertaken to illustrate about the difficulties met by third year students (applied languages) in the department of English at Constantine1 University when they translate the “ing-form” from English into Arabic. It aims at highlighting the problems resulting from the lack of grammatical background knowledge in both languages. The research data were gathered through a questionnaire and a grammar and translation test to verify the plausibility of the hypothesis formulated as follows: if the third year English students lack grammatical background knowledge in respect with the “-ing” forms, they will produce a wrong translation of these forms when translating from English into Arabic. After analyzing students’ mistakes, it has been revealed that these mistakes in producing appropriate “ing-form” are stemming from students’ lack of appropriate grammatical knowledge in this area and their unfamiliarity with the grammatical rules in both languages as regards the aspect investigated. On the basis of the results obtained, some recommendations are suggested for teachers and learners of translation in order to help them handle such a problem. |

The purpose of this study is to have some insights about the learners’ awareness of the English second conditionals, and the different problems which the students may face when translating tem into Arabic and vice versa. It is hypothesized that the third English students would not be able to provide correct translations of these conditionals as they would not be able to distinguish between the past conditional used in the second type conditionals and the real past simple. In order to check the validity of the hypothesis suggested above, a questionnaire and a test are administered to third year students of English at University of Constantine-1. The questionnaire is designed to test students’ attitudes towards translation and conditionals. They are asked many questions related to their background knowledge about translation and the second type conditionals. The test, however, is designed to test their knowledge of conditionals by asking them to translate a number of sentences in Arabic and English containing second and third type conditionals. Hence, the findings reveal that students have serious problems that make them unable to translate the past conditional into Arabic and English appropriately. The difficulty in understanding its meaning and the confusion between the past simple and the unreal one lead to inappropriate translations |

The inability to distinguish between British English and American English is a major problem
affecting writing accuracy. Thus, students are not decisive about which variety to use; they
tend to mix both varieties in many aspects either in pronunciation, grammar, spelling and
vocabulary. Therefore, our purpose in this research is to investigate whether the students are
aware or not of the differences in spelling and vocabulary existing between British and
American English. For that sake, we have addressed a questionnaire and a test to a random
sample of forty Master 1 students in the University Frères Mentouri- Constantine to find
answers to our questions. The questionnaire aims to collect data about students’ perceptions
of their own level and general knowledge about language varieties and its importance in
learning English, while the test is used to actually assess their procedural knowledge in this
area. The findings have revealed that Master 1 students are unaware of the differences
between British English and American English in terms of spelling and vocabulary which
rejects our hypothesis. This stresses the need for teachers to deal more explicitly with this
issue in the classroom. |

The aim of this research is, on the one hand, to have some insights about students’ knowledge
of idioms. On the other hand, it sheds light on the major difficulties students find in grasping
the figurative sense of English idioms and the different problems they come across in
translating idiomatic expressions into Arabic. The choice of this subject is determined by the
fact that idioms are the most problematic part of language to deal with. The Data for this
study are collected through a test that is given to 3rd year students of English in order to
assess the degree of familiarity/unfamiliarity with the different categories of idioms and to
check the impact of this familiarity if ever on their translation performance. The results
obtained have confirmed the hypothesis we postulated. Students are found to be more familiar
with literal idioms. They, however, lack knowledge of pure and semi idioms and this affects
largely their translation performance. They have also revealed that students are found to use
paraphrasing strategy to overcome the difficulties of translating the idiomatic expressions they
are not familiar with. This means they are at least aware that word for word translation is not
helpful as it destroys the real meaning of the idioms whose meaning escape literal
interpretation. |

Foreign language speaking anxiety is considered as one of the common facts in learning English as a foreign language. At some points, many foreign students suffered from fear of speaking in front of their classmates in oral class. Thus, they keep away from any oral communication. All these, are due to anxiety because there is a strong association between speaking anxiety and performance in oral classroom. This study aims to investigate the specific thoughts students hold concerning speaking foreign language in oral classroom. Furthermore, this research focuses on the influence of the three possible sources of speaking anxiety 1-communication apprehension, 2-fear of negative evaluation and 3- test anxiety. This study investigates their affect on Mentouri university student‟s performance in oral classroom. So data is gathered from a sample of 3rd year students at the department of English .the results revealed that anxiety do not hold back Mentouri university students from achieving good performance and good marks |
