Résumé : |
Self-efficacy is considered as an important factor in the learning process. It can stimulate as
well as increase one’s own will in learning. The present study investigates the importance of
self-efficacy in developing students’ speaking skills. It aims at examining factors affecting the
learners’ self-efficacy, such as rewards and teachers’ feedback in developing students’ oral
performance. Besides, it also examines sources of self-efficacy and ways to build and
maintain the learners’ self-efficacy in speaking English as a foreign language. In order to
carry out our study, we hypothesize that ‘‘students with high self-efficacy are likely to
perform better in speaking than those with lower self-efficacy.’’ To reach our stated
objectives, students and teachers questionnaires are designed. The students involved in the
questionnaire are randomly chosen among first year LMD students of English at the
University of Frères Mentouri, department of Letters and English Language. Moreover, a
random sample of ten Oral Expression teachers of the same department has been given a
questionnaire. These questionnaires are administered to check whether self-efficacy affects
students’ speaking skills, or it has no influence on their verbal behavior. This investigation
also includes a discussion of the results which enable us to confirm that self-efficacy has
indeed a great and a strong impact on the students’ speaking skills. Thus, the results obtained
confirm our research hypothesis |
