The present study aims at investigating if there is any correlation between prediction and reading comprehension. The hypothesis for this study is that if students are able to make correct predictions about the content of a certain text; they are also able to answer comprehension questions about it. This research studies the case of first-year LMD students at the University of Constantine. A test, made up of a reading selection of three parts and seven comprehension questions, was administered to seventy six students who participated in the study. The participants were divided into two groups: an experimental group in which the participants made explicit predictions about the content of the selection before and while reading, and a control group in which the participants did not make any explicit predictions. The correlation coefficient of the prediction and the comprehension scores got by the experimental group was calculated, and the scores of comprehension got by the two groups were compared to see how prediction affects comprehension. The results show that prediction does not correlate with reading comprehension as expected, and that a good performance in prediction does not necessarily lead to a good performance in reading comprehension |
