in the learning process, and that they are a part and parcel of the latter. Following error analysis
approach, the present study aims at analyzing third-year students’ written compositions at the
Department of Letters and the English language at university of Frères Mentouri, Constantine.
The analysis centered on identifying tense error occurrences, understanding, and explaining the
potential sources behind their production. Accordingly, it was hypothesized that the lack of
grammatical knowledge about English tenses and aspects would lead to committing errors and
improperly employ them in different contexts. To achieve the research objectives, a
questionnaire and forty essays of randomly selected students out of a population of 355 students
were used as data collection instruments. The results obtained from an in-depth scrutiny of the
participants’ errors and the classification thereof ,by adopting the surface strategy taxonomy
suggested by Dulay, Burt, and krashen (1982) revealed that the most recurrent errors committed
in the students’ writing are related to the use of the present perfect tense , present progressive
tense ,and past simple tense . Furthermore, the results showed that the majority of tense errors
are mostly attributed to the mother tongue interference ; in other words, the influence of Arabic
grammatical tenses on the English ones. The rest of errors were related to subject-verb
agreement and wrong verb forms ; these are clearly intralingual errors due to incomplete
learning of the English verb tenses. Hence , it is recommended that students need to completely
cut out their first language in an English learning context and that teachers should maximize
the students’ exposure to more formal tasks to help them get rid of transferring their linguistic
old habits into English and enhance their comprehension of all the English tenses . In
conclusion, some limitations of the study have been outlined, so as to offer guidance on how

commonly used connectors belonging to each of the four types (following Halliday and
Hasan's typological division, 1976), to what extent students are competent in using
conjunctions, and which ones they face more difficulty with. For this, it was hypothesized that
third year students master the use of conjunctions to a limited extent. In fact, seventy essays
were collected and profoundly analyzed in terms of conjunctive elements' use. The results
reveal that the connectors 'and', 'but', 'so', 'because' and 'to sum up' are the most widely used
connectors. They also show that third year students at the University of Constantine 1, are
highly competent regarding the use of conjunctions. They only experience a few difficulties
with the additive 'and' as well as adversative connectors used to express concession in
particular. On the basis of these results, it appears that third-year students' cohesive problems

repeatedly tend to misuse them. For that, it was presumed that when students’
interlanguage develops, they will be able to overcome such problems. Hence, two
groups of students differing in their level of education were targeted to form the
population of the present research. Two tools were chosen to carry out the
empirical study: a multiple choice test and a questionnaire. The test aimed at
examining the real use of the avoidance strategy among both groups of the
sample, while the questionnaire intended to elicit students’ personal opinions on
this subject. The obtained results show that although students’ interlanguage
improved, it cannot help much to overcome the problems encountered with
phrasal verbs. It attempts to discover to what extent the translator has been able to translate elliptical items and whether he has preserved the author’s style in the target text. Some extracts have been compared and analyzed in terms of elliptical elements translatability; i.e. how ellipsis in English has been translated into Arabic, and what are the similarities and differences that lie between the two. The research work reveals that the translator in general was able to render the elliptical instances of the original text in Arabic because of the evident functional similarity of ellipsis. Some techniques were used to compensate partially for the loss in the source text. In general, the translator was mostly faithful to Hemingway’s inclusion of ellipsis as a feature of style.
