Résumé : |
The present research deals with difficulties in translating scientific/biological texts from
English into Arabic, the case of third year students. The target is to investigate new
pedagogical methods that teachers may use to help students overcome the difficulties they
encounter while translating scientific texts. The choice of students from the English
Department Mentouri University lies behind the fact that they have studied translation for two
years and are good at translating from English into Arabic. It was hypothesized that students
would translate better only when they are supported by new teaching methods about
translating scientific/biological texts. The data was gathered by means of a research tool in the
form of a questionnaire for teachers and a written translation test. The results show that most
of students failed to translate the biological terms because they had particularly no theoretical
courses about it during their studies. In addition, through the teacher’s questionnaire we
concluded that students had a poor scientific background. As a result some pedagogical
recommendations were stated as a starting point towards resolving this problem and helping
students cope with scientific terminology in the translation process |

“Language Sciences Place Grammar Activities Third Year Secondary School |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
The present work represents an evaluation of the grammar activities in “New
Prospects”, the textbook designed for Third Year Algerian Secondary School, in relation to
the Communicative Language Teaching objectives. This research work is built on the
observation that students fail to express themselves through grammatically correct sentences
in speaking and writing. It aims at finding whether the grammar activities in “New Prospects”
are of a communicative type or not. It is also intended to investigate the appropriateness of the
teaching environment to apply Communicative Language Teaching principles and the
difficulties that hinder its implementation. We hypothesize that grammar activities in “New
Prospects” do not involve students in communicative tasks, and that teachers lack the required
teaching/learning environment to implement Communicative Language Teaching.
To achieve these aims, we have conducted an examination of the grammar activities in
relation to the Communicative Language Teaching objectives. For the sake of collecting
information about the teaching environment and the impediments, we have addressed a
Teachers’ questionnaire.
Our research findings revealed that “New Prospects” does not meet Communicative
Language Teaching principles in terms of grammar activities. As regards the students’
involvement, most activities foster individual work; collaborative opportunities are not
catered for. It was also found that teachers lack the adequate environment to apply the
communicative approach. The low English level students have and the large numbers of
students per classes are the most noticeable obstacles. |
