Heterotrophic denitrification is one of the most selective and advanced method for nitrate removal, it is usually inhibited by insufficient carbon sources. This process requires the use of a final electron acceptor, often it is a hydrocarbon such as methanol, glucose, fructose .... In our case we tested at 35 ° C in a suitable nutrient medium, sodium succinate and methanol, in a first step by the use of a mixed culture taken from the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) Ibn Ziad, Constantine , Algeria. In a second step by five bacterial strains that have been isolated but only the N5 and N6 strains that have been identified.
five bacterial strains were isolated but only the strains N5 and N6 were identified. The strains were preliminarily identified using biochemical, Gram staining and by API 20 E system, tests and then a method based on the similarity of the PCR-16S rRNA. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that both strains were most closely related to Enterobacter hormaechei with sequence similarities of 99%. Both strains showed an excellent capability to remove nitrate and to transform carbon substances namely methanol and sodium-succinate to carbon dioxide.
This process was accompanied by a slight rise in pH with a simultaneous production of nitrogen gas as the end product at 35°C. Nitrate was removed after 48 h of incubation. Thus, the anaerobic denitrification ability of strains N5 and N6 has been proved. Sodium-succcinate is the most favorable carbon source for denitrification by both strains (N5 and N6).
Furthermore, strains N5 and N6 could effectively remove nitrate at low C/N ratios and under conditions where the temperature is elevated, which would benefit nitrate removal from the wastewater.

The adsorption mechanism of manganese nitrate on this clay was studied by analysis of the isotherms of the cations exchanged from the vermiculite (K+ and Ca2+) and the ions (NO3- and Mn2+) adsorbed on the vermiculite. The kinetic of adsorption of the Mn2+ ions on vermiculite was found of pseudo-second-order type with a constant rate of 0,170 g.mg-1.min-1. The adsorption temperature dependence between 25 °C and 45 °C has demonstrated an endothermic and spontaneous dsorption.
The amount of exchanged Mn2+ ions in equivalent per gram represents only 17% of the total adsorbed uptake. 83% of the Mn2+ and NO3- ions have been adsorbed at the edges of the layers. The milling of the vermiculite has involved a decrease in the grains size and thus an increase in the edge layer adsorption site content allowing an increase of 19 % of the maximum adsorption uptake compared to raw vermiculite. The milled vermiculite was more grinded by sonication at 20 kHz.
Increasing of sonication time, presence of H2O2, and the increase of the vermiculite concentration have caused an accentuation of sonication effect, this resulted the decreasing of the size to 8 µm.
Moreover, a 2% fraction of submicron-sized particles was appeared. The pH of the vermiculite suspensions was increased. The number of the -OH sites was determined by acid-base titration using Gran method was also increased. The infrared spectra of the raw and sonicated vermiculites in H2O or containing H2O2 were very similar. XRD spectra showed that the sonication did not affect the vermiculite structure. The sonication leads to increase the maximum uptake by 31 %. The linear variation of the Mn2+ adsorption capacity with respect to the sum of the estimated geometric perimeter of the sonicated particles (assuming square shaped particles) confirms an adsorption
process at the edge of layers. The sonicated sample during 5 h in H2O2 has been grafted with butylimidazolium. This was realized in two steps. In the first step, we grafted 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane instead of the –OH sites. In the second step, we conducted a nucleophilic substitution of chlorine with methyl-imidazole. The treatment of wastewater in wastewater treatment plants separates purified water from a secondary residue called sludge. These residues are rich in organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus and trace elements. A healthy reuse of this sludge as fertilizer or in other areas requires good characterization. The objective of this doctoral thesis is the characterization of sewage sludge issues from some wastewater treatment plants in eastern Algeria. The first part was devoted to analyze and characterization of sewage sludge issues from three wastewater treatment plants of Batna, Jijel and Sétif, in order to study the reuse of those sludge as fertilizer. The second part of this thesis was focused on the evaluation of the influence of the calcination temperature on the composition of sludge as well as the determination of non-isothermal kinetic parameters, two sludge were chosen for this study, and those are from wastewater treatment plants of Sétif and Jijel.
