The present study deals with investigating the problem faced by learners of English as a
second language when using or translating prepositions from their source language to the
target one, or vice versa. This study is divided into two parts: A theoretical chapter and a
practical one. The former begins with some definitions and theories which are related to the
topic being investigated, such as: Translation, transfer, Contrastive and error analysis, and
prepositions which are the core of this study. The practical part is based on a sample of twenty
sentences that contain prepositions translated by thirty third year English L.M.D students, at
Mentouri University-Constantine. These translated sentences are analysed to conclude that
learners of English as a second language transfer either positively or negatively from their
source language when using prepositions. |
