countless studies. There is a growing recognition that foreign language learners need to be
instructed on the cultural background of the target language to help them achieve the cultural
understanding that would accompany their linguistic knowledge. Despite this, it seems that
the inclusion of culture is still overlooked in many language classrooms. The present study
seeks to examine the situation of culture teaching and learning in the department of English,
Mentouri University-Constantine. More specifically, it attempts to find out whether culture
is given much importance inside the language classrooms, and whether first year master
students are cognisant of the significance of culture in their learning of the English language.
Another aspect of this study is finding out how much students know about the British
culture. In order to answer these research questions, two questionnaires have been submitted
to both the teachers and the students of the department of English. The obtained results have
shown that culture is pushed in the background, notwithstanding the teachers’ awareness of
its importance in foreign language learning. Besides, the students’ questionnaire has
revealed that despite the students’ awareness of the importance of culture, their knowledge
about the target culture has proved to be quite limited. These results come to confirm the
assumption which underlies the present research that first year master students are not
knowledgeable enough about the target culture, mainly because of the little attention paid to

The data was collected by means of a test and a questionnaire and was analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results obtained confirm that First Year Master students of English are not well aware of this problem which arises from the cultural differences between Arabic and English. It also reveals that they are not well aware of all the strategies suggested by theorists to solve it. The study concluded with some recommendations to enrich students' cultural knowledge to improve their translation level. to be the least problematic or challenging in as far as the 'translatability' from one (source)
language into another (target) language is concerned. However, when duly and profoundly
approached, PNs would turn out to be much more notorious and slippery than otherwise. The
present research deals with the problem of translating proper names from English into Arabic
or vice versa, and the reasons behind English foreign learner′s miscomprehension and
mistranslation of this type of proper names .Particularly, the study seeks to gauge the general
students′ knowledge of translation and proper names .This is shown in a questionnaire of 10
brief questions, which was given to a sample of 30 of English (Third year). The test is divided
into two exercises .The former consists of 10 English sentences containing different proper
names were asked to be translated into Arabic, and the second is totally the opposite .The
results of the research tools (questionnaire and test) have proved the validity of the hypothesis
which said if English foreign learners have the translatability of proper names and they are

Foreign language learners may spend all their life acquiring new words; it is a non-stop process. The present research, however, aims to show the role of antonyms as one of the strategies used to learn as many lexical items as possible of the target language rapidly and easily. A sample of learners of English at Mouloud Kacem Neit Belkacem Secondary School has been divided into two groups: one of them was given a session on antonyms whereas the other was not; then, a test of three activities was administered to both groups in order to test the rapidity and easiness of vocabulary learning. The findings have proved that the group which had taken a session on antonyms performed better than the group that had not been introduced to antonyms. relations and tackles some problems of contextual representations while translating Arabic
polysemous words in two translated versions of the Quran's meanings into English. In the
light of this, it was hypothesized that translators of the Quran have to consider the contexts,
where these Arabic polysemous words occur, as a basis for attaining a successful
translation. Thus, to check the validity of the stated hypothesis, and after developing an
understanding of the topic through a review of literature, fifteen lexical words chosen
randomly from various Quranic verses translated by Yusuf Ali and Pickthall were analyzed
via a contextual procedure. The analysis of these polysemous words ' translations revealed
