A learner or a
translator cannot pretend to have a mastery of any language if they do not have knowledge of
proverbs. Thus, learning a language or translation entails learning about proverbs which are a
reflection of the culture of that language. The present research paper investigates Algerian
Master one students’ knowledge and awareness about English and Arabic proverbs. The
sample of the study consists of twenty-five Master one students of English in Applied
Languages Studies, at Mentouri University, Constantine 1. Both a questionnaire and a
translation test are designed to answer the questions of the study. The questionnaire gives
insights about Master one students’ attitudes and perception of the importance of proverbs in
language learning and translation, whereas the test uncovers some of the difficulties that the
students encounter in the process of proverbs’ translation in both directions of English-Arabic
translation, as well as the different strategies they use during this process. The study reveals
that, though the students claim that they perceive proverbs as important elements in language
learning and translation, they do not make any serious efforts to improve their background
knowledge of proverbs. Some of the problems the students face in proverb translation include
failure to render a proverb by an equivalent proverb in the target language, failure in
understanding the meaning of proverbs whether in English or Arabic. The difficulties are
caused by the students’ poor cultural knowledge of proverbs both in Arabic and in English. To
overcome these obstacles, Master one students resort to paraphrasing and literal translation,
instead of rendering a proverb by an equivalent proverb in the target language. The study puts
forward some suggestions to improve Master one students’ proficiency in proverb translation
such as the use of dictionaries, extensive reading of cultural material and practicing translation
more frequently.Diplome : Master 2 Permalink : https://bu.umc.edu.dz/master/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=13235 Students’ Awareness, Comprehension and Translation of Some Proverbs from English into Arabic and from Arabic into English The Case of First Year Master Students, Applied Language Studies, Frères Mentouri University Constantine 1 [texte imprimé] / Marwa Laib, Auteur ; Sabrina Moussa, Directeur de thèse . - CONSTANTINE [ALGERIE] : Université Frères Mentouri Constantine, 2020 . - 109 f. ; 30cm.

Titre : Translation of proverbs from english into arabic: strategies used and problems faced : The case study of first year master students, applied language studies at the department of english, university of constantine 1. Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Hichem Saih, Auteur ; Abdellah (eng) Segni, Auteur ; Meriem Bouhenika, Directeur de thèse Editeur : CONSTANTINE [ALGERIE] : Université Frères Mentouri Constantine Année de publication : 2017 Importance : 70 f. Format : 30 cm. Note générale : Une copie électronique PDF disponible en BUC. Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Lettres et Langues Etrangères:Langue Anglaise Tags : Applied Language Studies Translation Proverbs English Arabic Index. décimale : 420 Langue anglaise Résumé : The present research work examines, through a questionnaire and a translation test; the students‟ of Master One Applied Languages Studies knowledge about translation as a whole theoretical field, and as a practical process to produce equivalent texts. Choosing this subject is due to the fact that proverbs are part of metaphorical language: They belong more to the culture of language then to its systematic features. This research attempts to indicate the problems that Master One students encounter in the process of translating English proverbs into Arabic. It points also to the translation strategies used during this process, and certainly suggests some translation strategies that may help students translate proverbs efficiently from English into Arabic. The researchers hypothesized that students will translate proverbs efficiently if they use the appropriate translation strategy. The results obtained show that the students‟ cultural background and their experience and knowledge about translating proverbs from English into Arabic are very limited. The students‟ ability to use of the appropriate strategy is limited and they often fail to find the adequate cultural equivalence, or paraphrase the correct meaning. In addition to that, students find lexical problems when they resort to literal translation. As such, the research hypothesis has not been confirmed. And as a result of indicating the problems, giving more importance to figurative language in and outside of the classrooms is a highly recommended step in reducing the students‟ problems Diplome : Master 2 Permalink : https://bu.umc.edu.dz/master/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=4734 Translation of proverbs from english into arabic: strategies used and problems faced : The case study of first year master students, applied language studies at the department of english, university of constantine 1.
